How do you deal with exploitation during Articleship?

Learning to effectively deal with the exploitation during Articleship saves you from going through unnecessary troubles and losing your time and focus from your main goals of pursuing CA: passing your CA exams and becoming CA.

Why did you choose CA for your further studies? Did you opt for CA out of your free will, or your parents’ compulsion?

While there are CA students who did not want to pursue the CA course but ended up in it on family pressure. But the rest of the students opt for the CA course out of their free will. They want to do something good in their life and they see pursuing CA as taking their life forward, which is of course a good thing.

And these students, while opting for the CA course, they dream to have a good future in CA. They want to give their best efforts in their pursuit of becoming CA.

And as they progress in the CA course, some of them find themselves in new and unimagined realities.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, Articleship and Principal are important aspects of the CA course in India. You do them right, and you set your CA pursuit a smooth course. You get them wrong, and they will bring you a different reality.

Feeling exploited during Articleship
Simply working longer hours during Articleship may not necessarily be an exploitation even if you feel so. But there are genuine instances where CA students during Articleship are exploited. This is when your Principal/senior/superior disregards your rightful interests entirely.

For examples: Principal refusing to give you adequate exam leave when you are entitled to such leave; Principal pressing you to show at work even when your dependent family member, such as your mother, suddenly falls ill and needs your attention; Principal pressing you to show up at work even when you are having genuine and serious health issues.

Dealing with exploitation
Learning to effectively deal with the exploitation during Articleship saves you from going through unnecessary troubles and losing your time and focus from your main goals of pursuing CA: passing your CA exams and becoming CA.

1. Standing your ground
While you have a right to save yourself from being exploited at work, you also run the risk of being mistreated at the workplace if you go against your Principal. If you choose to stick to your rights and go against your Principal, you may face mistreatment at workplace.

One important point to note here is that if you want to achieve your goals without wasting any of your time, giving your Principal more reasons to have more issues with you at work may only hold you back from progressing to achieve your goals. So, the smart choice here would be to have less and less issues with your Principal.

2. Focussing on the good in the bad
Carrying anger and negativity in you towards your Principal for exploiting you does not harm him and it does not do you any good. It only add to your burdens.

So, ask yourself: what can possibly be good about your bad situation? What are the things in this bad situation that if you focus on them it will help your future?

You need to focus on the good in the bad, and there are always plenty of good things to be grateful for in every bad situation.

3. Forgiving
If you don’t actively flush out the negativity from your thoughts and feelings, you will be held back from becoming your best self. The happy, cherishing and enjoying self.

If people do you wrong and they do not realise and apologize for it, you don’t have to suffer because of them. You need to know that everyone has good and bad in them. Just like you need to forgive yourself for the bad in you, it is important to forgive others for the bad they cause you. Do this for your own good, not for them.

4. Moving on and moving forward in life
If you have been exploited during your Articleship, and if your mental and emotional well-being have been affected as a result, you may feel that you have every right to carry anger towards the ones who exploited you. The bad part about carrying anger and negativity in you even for the people who wronged you is that if affects you and your well being more.

I believe that you don’t have to suffer anymore. That you deserve to have a much better life. And the best thing to do to have such a life is to move on from the troubles you’ve had in your life. You need to let go of anger and negativity to embrace your better life ahead.

5. Learning helpful lessons from it
The tough times that we go through in our life, they teach us valuable and helpful life-lessons if we look for them. They help us to create and build a better life.

As I said, Articleship and Principal are important aspects of the CA course. To become CA, you need to go through them. Some students enjoy their Articleship and have good relations with their Principal, while other students have not so good experience.

But if you really want to become CA, move forward and have a better life, despite having negative experiences in your Articleship and with your Principal, you can move on from these and have a much better life. Make a good choice.
