It is not fair for the CA students to go through any kind of harassment at workplace during Articleship, or to face mistreatment and exploitation. Articleship is designed for CA students for acquiring skills, for learning by doing, for having practical work experience in the various fields related to Accountancy.
Every CA student has to go through Articleship to become a Chartered Accountant. The purpose of Articleship for the CA students is to have them have practical work experience apart from having them gain the theoretical education.
The learning and experiences in Articleship differ for each CA student. Some enjoy this period of three years. They acquire new skills, learn how to do and get things done as part of the works they are entrusted with.
However, there are also CA students who find the Articleship experience unfair and negative, nothing like they have seen in their lives so far. What exactly do these CA students go through, who is responsible for their sufferings, and how to best deal such challenges?
One of the major challenges these students face during Articleship is harassment, from their superiors and Principals. Ideally, every CA student in Articleship has to have conducive work environment where they are given plenty of opportunities to learn by doing. Practically, at some firms, the realities remain far behind the ideals.
There have been cases of CA students facing mistreatment and exploitation at their work-place during Articleship, and so have come up at least one case of harassment so far.
Where the principal allegedly was abusive, his office didn’t have the conducive work environment, and hence there were no new CA students joining his firm for Articleship. One CA student working under him had completed the Articleship training and the Principal (CA) signed the Articleship Completion Certificate (Form 108). The Principal wanted this CA student to join back his firm as an employee. He then allegedly threatened this CA student saying if he didn’t join him back, he would file a complaint with the ICAI on the ground that this CA student obtained his signatures by forgery or fraud.
It is not fair for the CA students to go through any kind of harassment at workplace during Articleship, or to face mistreatment and exploitation.
It is obvious that the ICAI didn’t require the CA students to go through Articleship to face exploitation, mistreatment or harassment. Articleship is designed for CA students for acquiring skills, for learning by doing, for having practical work experience in the various fields related to Accountancy.
The main question here is, Is there proper mechanism designed to help the concerned CA students facing such unnecessary and negative experiences at work during Articleship?
