Principal making you work outside of office hours?

Principal making you work outside of office hours?

Making you work outside of your office hours can be frustrating and angering. And if this continues on a daily basis, things can become very negative for you.

Principals in the CA firms, are they all good? All bad? Some good and some bad?

Most importantly, as an Article assistant, how do they affect you? Good? Bad? Worse? And how do you deal with it?

Making you work outside of office hours

You are not obligated to work outside of your office hours. That is a universal right of anyone working.

But what if your Principal makes you work outside of your office hours?

If you are on good terms with your Principal, Great! You will likely have no problem because you are on good terms with your Principal.

But what if you are ‘not’ in good terms with your Principal?

Making you work outside of your office hours can be frustrating and angering. And if this continues on a daily basis, things can become very negative for you.

So, should you stop working outside of your office hours? Should you remain passive, let the negativity take you over and let the same continue for the rest of your Articleship life? What should you do?

The solution, in this case, is to do with making small changes in your mindset and developing a healthy perspective towards the problem.

1. Accept the fact

Accept the fact that the problems your Principal create for you do exist and they do affect you negatively.

2. Understand the short-term nature

Understand this: Your Principal making you work outside of your office work is a short-term problem. At a maximum, this problem is going to be there until you finish your Articleship.

Your Principal cannot make you work outside of your office hours forever; his role in your life will finish with the completion of your Articleship. Hence, understand that this problem is a short-term one (3 years at max).

3. Keep your long-term, bigger want

Should you endure the problem? And if yes … why?

If you have taken the CA course out of your free will, you likely took it because you saw something good in it for you.

Maybe becoming CA meant a great deal to you. Maybe you wanted to work hard for some years and reap the benefits of your hard work thereafter. Maybe the CA tag meant gaining a good reputation for you and your family in your community and beyond. You can have any other reason.

The point here is, you likely wanted something big in the long term in exchange for your efforts and sacrifice in the short term. The big things you likely wanted are becoming CA and building yourself a good career. Achieving these wants take a long time; they are long-term wants.

Another point to note here is, there is a difference between living in an ideal and rightful world on the one hand, and living in a practical and real world on the other hand.

The unwanted problems that you face during your Articleship, you should not face them in an ideal and a rightful world. But we live in a practical and real world where bad and unwanted things do happen.

What is best here is to keep your long-term want of becoming CA and building yourself a good career even if you have to endure problems in the short term because becoming CA and building yourself a good career takes a long time of efforts and pain.

Forgetting your bigger, long-term want when you face problems in your short-term can a big loss.

Keep your bigger want of becoming CA, building yourself a good career, moving forward in its direction and succeeding at it, close to you, despite the problems you face in the short term.

Attempt to make small changes in your mindset, develop a healthy perspective towards the problem and get back to your real, practical world with a renewed mind and a healthy perspective. You will not have to face negativity even when there is a problem.
