Principal telling you to stay late hours?

You can lose your mind and feel frustrated and miserable when told to stay late in the office. And you may not like your principal and your principal may not like you. And this can go on for the rest of your Articleship period. Or, you can decide to deal with your situation tactfully.

Articleship, when done right, can turn out to be a valuable learning period. Otherwise, it can be a three years of a nightmare.

There are CA students who work and develop their skills. Others find it difficult to cope with the settings in their CA firm. Most of the times it is the Principal or the manager in the CA firm who becomes the source of all of your problems during Articleship.

Staying late in the office

One painful example can be when your Principal tells you to work outside of the office hours or to stay late in the office.

As a CA student, you may have planned your daily routine for your office and your non-office time. And when your office hours is extended, your planned non-office routine is affected. Moreover, it is your right to have your time for your own self outside of your office hours.

Two sides

You have two sides:

One:

Your Principal tells you to stay late in the office and when he does tell you that, you stay in the office and feel miserable and frustrated about it. And this continues through the rest of your Articleship period.

Two:

Your Principal tells you to stay late in the office and you decide to make the best of your situation.

Making the best of your situation

First, you try to understand all the possible reasons behind Principal asking you to stay late in the office.

Possible reasons

Here are the possible reasons

1. Maybe the workload in your office is more and maybe it cannot be completed within the office hours, and hence you are told to stay late and carry out the work
2. Maybe your Principal expected you to carry out certain level of work during the office hours, and maybe your outcome fell shorter than your Principal’s expectations in you
3. Maybe something urgent or pressing came up
4. Maybe there’s a deadline looming around for the works to be carried out and the outcome to be submitted.
5. In the worst-case scenario, maybe the Principal wants to punish you for something
6. Maybe the Principal is taking out his frustrations on you

What could objectively be the possible reason(s) behind Principal telling you to stay late in the office?

Point number 1? 2? 3? 4? 5? 6?

Now, you decide to make the best of your situation.

Ways to make the best of your situation

Again, you can lose your mind and feel frustrated and miserable when told to stay late in the office. And you may not like your Principal and your Principal may not like you. And this can go on for the rest of your Articleship period.

Or, you can decide to deal with your situation tactfully.

You learn better ways to convince your Principal to let you leave the office on your time. You try different ways of convincing your Principal. And if you are permitted to leave, good for you.

If you are still told to stay, here are ways to make the best of your situation.

1. You adapt to your situation

That means, you may have had expectations of your work hours and your non work hours, set this expectation aside for the time being. Because sometimes there are more important things than limiting yourself to work only within the office hours.

2. Carry out the works

And since you are told to stay late in the office anyways, carry out the required works as productively as possible. You may not see the benefit of doing this immediately. You may not be appreciated for this immediately or you may not get the appreciation at all. But if you carry out the required works regardless of the appreciation or whether you see any immediate benefit of doing it or not, carrying out the required work means you doing something which is valuable to some person, and when you will have completed your Articleship successfully, you will see that doing this kind of works will pay you out greatly.

3. Become good at your works

In case you have a tendency to lazy around when it comes to work, find better ways of carrying out your works.

Becoming CA is a 5-year goal (long-term) goal. Merely becoming CA won’t be enough. You will have to build your career after becoming CA. And building career takes good effort and time. Becoming better at your works is a surefire way for building your career on solid grounds.

4. See the good side of your situation

Yes, train your mind to see the good side in your situation. There is always a good side to a situation. If you train your mind to see the good side, you will see it.

If you tend to feel miserable and frustrated when you are told to stay late in the office, and if you are to stay late in the office anyways, attempt to find out how you can stay positive and productive. Staying positive and productive for a sustained period will add up to your qualities and will be a plus point when building yourself a good career.

5. Work in the interest of your well being

Articleship is a delicate period for many CA students. Sometimes it tests you in every possible way and you don’t have a much say in it. But no matter what happens to you or how bad your manager or your Principal behaves with you, you always have a scope to take care of your mind and emotions even while you are being tested. Learn to take care of your mind and emotions (your thoughts and feelings).

6. Make your Articleship experience positive and successful

You don’t want to remember your Articleship period as being gruesome for the rest of your life. Doing the above will make sure that you will most likely have a positive and successful Articleship experience.
